Learning log #12 >actual performance<

Before the performance, I went home to take some props for the event. When i arrived in school, i quickly changed into my clothes. Then rehearse for awhile. Once fully rehearsed, my group and I proceeded to the AVA room for the performance. As I am playing as tybalt, I started off quite hesitant. At first i was nervous, but as i continued with my script, i managed to gain more confidence speaking during the play. Overall, i think my group did quite well, as long as we had done the very best.

Learning log #11 >preparation for performance<

Three weeks before the actual performance day, my group went to mayo st, which is located near arab street, to rent romeo and juliet's costume. We also bought other stuffs such as masks and gloves. During sept hols, we rehearse once at chun hwee's house. We also discuss about what are we gonna actually wear for the performance.

Learning Log #10

Last week, we only have 1 lesson because on Tuesday it is school holiday due to Teachers Day! So I took that opportunity to practice on my acting skills.
On our second lesson, we were told to do our third essay for Term 3 which is about Setting. We were given about 40 minutes to complete the task given by Mr Chua. Luckily, it was an open book test which allows me to refer to my notes which makes my task easier. I tried my best to complete it but still did not manage to finish it on time. So, that was our last Literature lesson for term three. Yeah, finally once again we have our break for a week. Wohoo!!! Within this week, I should revise, relax and refresh my memory.

Learning Log #9

On the first lesson, I received my paper which is the common test paper. I got 12 marks, which I had improved than the previous one. Mr Chua said that we can get higher marks if we can argue well for those marks referring to our own scripts and the booklet that he gave to us.
On the second lesson, I learnt about Setting which is one of the topics for Literature. There are four aspects of setting. They are place, time physical environment and social environment. We were given lecture notes on Setting during my teacher's powerpoint presentation. Last but not least, we were given a sheet of paper indicating our performance’s date and time. My literature performance will be on the following week. Finally I want to wish all teachers a happy Teachers Day!!! xD

Learning Log #8

On the first lesson, we did not learn anything as we were told to rehearse on our play. As this is our first time rehearsing, we acted with the help of the script. The director, Yi Cong, took down some notes of our performance. Then, he briefs us on our acting skills. Most of us did not project out our voice. That is why our performance not that good. But I am sure there is room for improvement.
On the second lesson, Mr Chua instructed us to do an essay. The title is “How does irony in 'Singapore River' help us to understand its theme?” I tried my best to answer the question by writing an essay. I did not understand what the question wants but when I flip through the notes I found that the essay is quite easy. After the test, I heaved a sigh of relief and hoping to get at least a pass.

Learning Log #7

During both lessons, we only could do our own work instead of having normal lessons like the previous week. I read through my literature worksheets in my file to prepare for next week's literature test. But on Friday, Mr Chua reminded us that there is a test next week and I felt very nervous. But the great thing is that we were given the passage first, and hence I can spent the weekend to understand the passage fully so that I am well- prepared and will strive for the best. Being able to know what passage will be tested also helps me to think of what questions will be coming up and this helps me to better prepare for the test.

Mr Chua also give us a model essay for unseen question 1 and we learnt that we are not suppose to copy down the points into the essay as this makes the whole thing looks so artificial.

Learning Log #6

At last, after a few days of break, our class was back to normal after the previous week. I was feeling happy after the situation was over.
On the first lesson, our class were scolded by Mr Chua because of some people in the class copied each others work and showing no integrity in doing their homework. Although I was not involved in that situation, our class had to resit for other test.
On the second lesson, we learnt about a poem of Singapore River. The poem is filled with some metaphors which describes it. We also learnt that metaphor are words which are comparison of one thing to another stating one thing is the other.

Learning Log #5

This week is so called the ‘peek of virus’ because there are so many people that are not well but I hope they will get well soon. We do not have lessons this week as on Tuesday and Wednesday, Mr Chua was on MC. Although we do not learn anything, we revise some of the things that he had taught us in the previous lessons. I also had started memorising my lines for the play that I will act as Tybalt. Although it is not a main character, it is also important because its act will combine with the main character’s act and will make a good and enjoyable play. I am not sure when the play will be held but in order to prepare myself, I had started memorising lines. Get well soon ok? :)

Learning Log #4

In this week's 1st lesson ( 21/7/09 ), we had learnt something called Irony. Mr Chua told us that it could be categorized into four main groups, Verbal Irony, Situational Irony, Dramatic Irony and lastly, Tragic Irony. However, we only learnt verbal, situational and dramatic irony.

Verbal irony is a deliberate comment of what you do not mean. In other words, it's a sarcasm comment that we made nastily to mock at a person or a thing. It will just a joke and make us laugh.

Situational irony is that there is a difference between expected and actual results. For example, in Romeo and Juliet that Mr Chua had shown to us, the readers or audience will normally think that in the end, Romeo will be together with Juliet. But unexpectedly, Romeo thought that Juliet is dead and eventually, he killed himself by drinking the poisonous potion. That was a situational irony as the result of the whole story was different from what the reader or audience expected.

Dramatic irony exists when a character in a literary or dramatic work perceives a situation in a limited way while the reader or audience is aware of a greater significance. For example, also in Romeo and Juliet, the readers or audience know exactly what happened but Romeo didn't know that Juliet had actually taken a potion which makes her appear to be died, or rather to be sleeping for a very long time. Then, Romeo thought that Juliet had died, thus he committed suicide. Being a reader or audience, we will normally felt sad for Romeo and Juliet because Romeo is unaware about the situation and this had led to a huge change in the whole story. We will wonder why Romeo would not want to wait a little longer or perhaps Juliet would conscious a little earlier. Therefore, these are just our own visualisation. We can't change the story.

In the 2nd lesson in Week 4,( 22/7/09 ), Mr Chua went through the effects and uses of Irony. It has three main effects; exposing folly, expressing anger and heightening tragedy. Hence, irony can also be expessed in many ways, not only in amusement, but also in other in other aspects. Lastly before bell rings, Mr Chua gave us a piece of homework about a passage " Something Nice for the Neighbours ".

Learning Log #3

In the first lesson in the third week ( 14/7/09 ), Mr Chua told us to sit according to our roles in the Shakespear performance. The most front is the director followed by romeo, juliet, capulet and tybalt. mr chua gave this formation a name which is 'the flying tiger'. it sounds unique to me. we were asked to compare our sketch of our role play. i think my partner, Sonia, did a superb job. So we decided to choose her sketch.

In the second lesson in the third week (15/7/09 ), Mr Chua showed us a video about a Samsui woman who work in Singapore long time ago. at first, she thought that singapore would not give her a better life, but she was horribly wrong. then, Mr chua told us to look at unssen poem 1 about Singapore River. i do not quite really understand the passage but i know that the poem has a huge meaning to it. we were also given a worksheet on where do we want to stay. flats or Shophouses? of course i will choose flats. lastly, Mr chua gave us a worksheet on foreign workers.

Learning Log #2

In week 2, lesson 3 ( 7/7/09 ), Mr Chua taught us about Narrative Perspective. Narration is the way the writer relates events to the readers; the way a story is told and the way it is narrated. The principal points of view are first person and third person. First person speakers are involved to at least some degree in the actions of the work. Third person speakers are outside the action and are mainly reporters of actions and speeches. Mr Chua also taught us the common narrative perspective which are the first person subjective, first person detached, first person observer, third person omniscient and third person objective. Lastly at the end of the lesson, Mr Chua gave a worksheet to check our understanding of that day’s lecture.

In week 2, lesson 4 ( 8/7/09 ), Mr Chua told us to take out our booklet and take a look at Unseen Prose Passage 1. Then, Mr Chua read the passage out loud. He also explained the meaning for some sentences. Then, Mr Chua gave us a worksheet about the passage. We were told to do the worksheet until Literature period ends. Lastly before the bell rings, Mr Chua gave us a piece of essay homework on narrative technique.

Till next time!

Learning Log #1

In lesson #1 in term 3 week 1 (30/6/09) , we were given a set of notes. It is about the materials that we are going to use doing Literature lessons. There are study guides to guide us in Literature lessons and to understand more about the lessons that our teacher had taught. In this booklet, there are glossary of common Literature terms that can help us if we do not know the meaning of difficult words. There were also unseen passages that we are going to learn and I can't wait to know more about it. After receiving the notes, Mr Chua gave out our Literature Mid-Year Examination Paper. I was really disappointed to see it. During the holidays, I said to myself to like Literature so that I can achieve good results in End-Of-Year exam. However, I will make sure that it will not stop me to achieve better results this term. We were also given four sheets of unseen essay evaluation and a sheet of learning log evaluation. It is for me to refer while doing my learning logs.
In lesson #2 (1/7/09) , when Mr Chua first step in into the class, he asked us to bring our pencil box and Literature file. We were then separated into four groups. I was in group Charlie. Then, we were divided into two groups. It took around five minutes to separate us. Then, we discussed about our roles that we want to take as our character. As we took Romeo and Juliet as our storyline, I chose Tybalt as my character. This character had lesser lines to remember but yet difficult role to play. Lastly, before our Literature Week 1 lesson ends, we were given a sheet of paper to roughly think about the costumes that we are going to wear during our performance. We have to think about the head, body, back, feet, accessories and sketch of Tybalt in his costumes that I had planned. That is all for now. I will be looking forward to Mr Chua's Literature lessons next week.
